Fulfilling a debt of gratitude

Headley crest.png

The Army Benevolent Fund and Mole Valley District Council are working with Headley Court the rehabilitation centre for injured military personnel to facilitate a march through Dorking by members of staff (I am not sure at this stage if any patients will be involved). The date – 28 June.

I have said I will find at least 20 if possible 30 former police officers to assist as Stewards along the High Street in Dorking. Timings have not been finalised but I would suggest the commitment will be within the envelope of 1030-1430 to allow for a briefing before deployment. Local schools have committed to lining the route and a large crowd can be anticipated.

This is an opportunity to do something positive to show our appreciation for all the wonderful work undertaken at Headley and recognise those men and women who have been injured during their service.

More details to follow.

Please let me know if you can commit yourself for a few hours to fulfil what for many can be seen as fulfilling a debt of gratitude. (No max-pax or Police Support Unit kit but a fluorescent tabard will be provided. I suspect you will have to live off the land but the parade route will I believe be closed for an hour.)

New TV series for Channel 4

I’ve received the following circular in respect of a Channel 4 TV series.  Unfortunately I’m much too young to qualify but if any of you would like to take part please go ahead and then contact O&B afterwards and tell me how you got on.  Of course, on reflection, you might not wish to take on another job.  OK.  It’s not compulsory!   Big Smile

Martin

==============

I hope you don’t mind me getting in touch.

We are currently casting for a new Channel 4 television series which will be presented by Mary Portas and we are looking for retired people who are aged 65 or over to take part.

We want to bring together a group of talented retired people who can use their skills for the benefit of their community.

From Catering to Gardening, DIY to Hairdressing, it doesn’t matter what people have done for a living they can all be a part of ‘The Agency’.

Below is the official blurb with more info about what we are trying to do:
————————————————————————————-
Channel 4 opens first job agency for OAPs

Channel 4 will open the doors to Britain’s first ever employment agency for the over 65s in a brand new series fronted by Mary Portas.

Brand expert and marketer Mary Portas has spotted a business opportunity – the potential of a huge resource that she plans to tap into by creating a brand new business with Britain’s often overlooked and under-valued pensioners.

Many over 65s are forced to retire simply because the law states that they have to stop working. But that doesn’t mean they’ve lost the skills and experience to cut it in the modern world, and if they ran their own business, they could work as long or as little as they liked.

So Mary is going to help them do exactly that. She’s setting up an agency representing anyone from 65 to 105, to compete against the rest of the world in anything from catering to building, childcare to beauty. Mary will cast the net wide to recruit an army of OAPs who may have been cast aside by society, but still have very much to offer.

————————————————————————————-

We would be hugely grateful if you could pass on this information to your team and members to see if this would be something they would be interested in.

Kind regards,

Hayley

Spring Forward

When do the clocks change?

What date is the clock change? What time is the clock change? All excellent questions.

When do the clocks go forward?

The clocks go forward this Saturday night, or in precise terms, 1am on Sunday, March 31.

That means the clocks go like this: 00:58, 00:59, 02:00. It marks the beginning of British Summer Time.

Will it be lighter in the evenings?

After the clocks have changed, it will be light for an hour longer in the evenings, so sunset won’t be until 7.32pm on Sunday. But dawn will be an hour later, too: sunrise will be at 6.38am.

Bear in mind that the days are currently getting longer by 4 minutes a day. All praise to the Sun God!

Why do the clocks go forward?

It’s not so much why they go forward – who doesn’t love light evenings? – as why they go back, largely for outdated and irrelevant reasons involving ‘agriculture.’ But although the current system seems set in stone, it’s been tinkered with several times before. From 1968 to 1971, for instance, the clocks stayed on British Summer Time all year round. Lately, the government is has been flirting with doing the same, or even moving both DST and BST forward an hour. Just don’t tell UKIP that’ll put us on the same time zone as the rest of Europe.

What happens to Big Ben when the clocks change?

What happens to Big Ben when the clocks change?

Big Ben [sic] is actually turned off for five hours leading up to the magic moment, from 8pm onwards on Saturday, Mar 30. But the lights inside are switched off, so the engineers can move the hands “without drawing too much attention or causing public concern.” We’re entertained by the notion of people driving off the Westminster Bridge, convinced the very fabric of time is unravelling before their eyes.

Time is an illusion.

Reinstate funding for research into mesothelioma

Retired colleague Martin Wodehouse, (pictured), was diagnosed with Mesothelioma on 18th May 2010.

His wife Linda Wodehouse has asked that we consider signing her petition.

The former labour government had put aside £40,000 ,000 to fund ongoing research into this deadly disease . When the coalition government came into power it quashed the funding saying that this disease would be eradicated in a few years .

However there is now proof that schools still have asbestos in them so our children could be future sufferers in 40-50 years time .

Former Surrey PC 188 Gordon MacFarlane

I left the Met. on Sunday 20th January 2013 after exactly 21 years service as a response team officer, following my contract on the 30+ scheme coming to an end.

Prior to this I served with the Surrey “Constabulary”, joining as cadet 76 on Sunday 6th September 1971. I became P.C. 188 on 9th August 1973 and was initially posted to Addlestone Division.

On the 1st August 1976 I joined HT-C, where I remained until I transferred to the Met (Kingston) on 20th January 1992.

I am having a leaving bash at 7pm on Saturday 2nd February 2013 at Imber Court, Molesey and was wondering if any of my old colleagues might see this message and would like to attend.

Regards

Gordon (now ex 141TX @ Hounslow).
